The Canadian Nuclear workers Council {CNWC} was formed in 1993 by the major Unions that represent workers in the Canadian Nuclear Industry. The main goal of the organization is to ensure that Unionized Workers in the Nuclear Industries have a voice in the ongoing debate around Nuclear Power. The council conducts the following activities to work towards it’s mandate.
The Canadian Nuclear Workers’ Council (CNWC) is an organization of workers represented by unions in various sectors of Canada’s nuclear industry — electric power utilities, uranium mining and processing, radioisotope production for medical and industrial purposes, and nuclear research.
The Council was created in 1993 to provide an organized focus and direction for the views and interests of unionized workers in all parts of a diverse industry that operates in five provinces across Canada. The CNWC also exists to ensure that the views of nuclear workers are heard in the public discussion on nuclear energy.
The Canadian Nuclear Workers’ Council works to ensure that members’ views are reflected in the ongoing debate about nuclear energy. The Council maintains a dialogue with other labour organizations to build support for our industry, explain nuclear issues, and address misconceptions about nuclear energy
CNWC has been active in making submissions to public hearings on a variety of nuclear issues, and attending conferences across the country. It has also produced a series of fact sheets and other information on nuclear topics. The Council produces a regular newsletter and encourages anyone with an interest in the nuclear industry to visit our website.
The CNWC is a founding member of the International Nuclear Workers Unions Network (INWUN). Our participation in this network ensures that the views of Canadian nuclear workers are heard at the international level.
As men and women whose daily working lives are spent on the front lines of the Canadian nuclear industry, nuclear workers firmly believe that nuclear energy is a safe and economical way to produce electricity. In addition, it produces no greenhouse gases, and is increasingly embraced by environmentalists as the ‘green’ solution for large-scale electricity production.
To carry out its purpose the objectives of CNWC are:
